Day 64 - Co-dependent on the co-sleeper?

Now that Little Elvis is two months old, his doctor said it was time to transition him from his co-sleeper to his bassinet.

So, we decided to attempt this on Sunday evening.

Our co-sleeper was situated in the middle of our bed. It had rigid plastic sides and a tummy and head guard for him. Since we have a queen bed, that left us each just enough room to lie on our backs.

I know this isn't an option for everyone, but we really enjoyed it. It was easy to get to him when he needed changing and easy to get him into when he was asleep. And for the past week, we had been able to put him in it while he was awake and he would put himself to sleep!

The doctor said he knew we were there even if he couldn't see us when we were lying down.

I figured this was a goodbye to his 5 hour sleeping stretches...

On Sunday, we put him in the bassinet and he started crying -- his diaper needed changing.

After that he was wide awake, so I rocked him until he fell asleep and miraculously got him into the bassinet without waking him.

He woke up 45 minutes later. I fed him and got him to sleep and put him back in. He awoke, but was pacified with the pacifier. He ended up sleeping 3 1/2 hours before waking up again. Then 3 1/2 hours again.

It wasn't 5 hours, and trust me I was exhausted all day, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected.

(Since I'm writing this a day late I can tell you that last night he was not happy to go into the bassinet and it took me an hour and a half to get him in there and asleep. But he did sleep about 4 hours at that stretch.)

I'm really dreading moving him to the crib in the nursery though. Any suggestions for that transition?

I don't really understand why the pediatrician told you that. Lots of kids co-sleep for years! What's up with that?

Caileigh is pretty easy going and didnt seem to mind the transition and with Aiden, I started him in the crib and he slept with us when he was older. I have heard people suggest putting them in the crib in the bassinet (if it is a small kind) or in the co-sleeper until they get used to the space and then weaning them off that. He is still young and may not really mind. It is hard to say. I hope when you do transition him, he does well. That co-sleeper is really cool! I sure wish I had had something like that. I really enjoy sleeping with Caileigh but Sean always worries that he will roll over on her. DUring our vacation her and I slept together and it was sure nice!

He is pretty close to outgrowing the co-sleeper, and we were planning to do it at some point anyway. She just spurred us into action.
There's a similar co-sleeper to ours at Target. We really enjoyed it.
