Little Elvis hates sleep

Seriously -- he won't sleep.

He's supposed to get about 14-15 hours of sleep a day and there's no way he gets that much. I don't want to venture a guess at the real amount because you will all think I am so awful, but it's not for lack of trying.

He apparently hates sleeping. He hates it when we make the room dark and try to rock him. Singing lullabies does seem to calm him some, but then he'll realize we're trying to get him to sleep and will start crying.

Last night we spent more than three hours trying to get him to go to sleep. Luckily for me, he did take a 3 hour nap during the day. That was really just luck -- he happened to fall asleep on the way back from the doctor's appointment and I left him in his car seat.

Today he slept for oh about 40 minutes total and trust me, I tried to get him to nap. We rocked, we glided, we sang, we sat quietly, I held him, I laid him down, I took him strolling (BIG mistake -- we walked for 30 minutes back to the house with him screaming and me crying.) I don't know what else to do.

I told the doctor he wasn't sleeping and wanted to feed every hour and a half to two hours. She said he needed to sleep more, but thought it was the trip to Mississippi that had thrown off his sleep schedule.

I know he needs sleep, but I honestly don't know what else to do. The poor little guy gets so tired and then he gets mad.

Any advice? I know sleep is important and seriously believe it's my fault he won't sleep. Please help!

I was just reading back on Aiden when he was the same age as Caileigh (5months) and at that time he was napping 3 times a day for 20min and waking every 2 hours at night. I can't really remember what I did to make it better but it just seemed to get better over time. Every baby is so different but I can tell you some things that "might" work. Keep in mind Caileigh stil wakes 4-5 times a night so I am not an expert by any means. I do know that by the time Aiden went down to 2 naps, he was sleeping much better and now that he has one nap he sleeps for 2 hours and I NEVER thought that would happen. With Caileigh (5 months) I aim for her to have 2 good naps and a cat nap each day. Her length of naps can vary from 45min to 2 hours.

-whatever you choose to do, be consistent
-follow the 2 hour rule.....put baby to sleep after 2 hours awake maximum (I remember this really helping me to have a sense of control over when I should be putting him down...I follow this for Caileigh during the day as well)
-If baby awakes before 45min, try and soothe back to sleep.....nursing, soother, gentle tummy patting etc.
-avoid overstimulation and tuck baby in at first sign of tired even if they havent been up for too long.

Those are a few things I can think of......keep us updated!!
P.S. Sorry I havent commented in awhile, been super busy but trying to keep updated on your blog. Glad that your trip went well!

Thanks for the advice Ashley! We are now trying the two hour rule. He fights it, but at least we're trying. I also called the doctor for advice and she recommended doing the tough love thing with his crib. We are going to attempt to put him down in the crib tonight and attempt (this will be hard I'm sure) to let him cry for 10 minutes before we go in and soothe him. She also said just to soothe, not to pick him up. Hopefully it will go well...
