Question...

Wow! What a difference a year makes.

This is a picture of Little Elvis from last August.

See how little he looks in his high chair?

You can click here to see video of him looking even tinier in his high chair.

Here's what my baby looks like now in the same high chair:

What a big boy!

His head is definitely over the top, and his feet are hitting the bottom.

He still fits in it fairly comfortably.

But our high chair is bigger than many others that we've encountered.

At some restaurants, I've had to squeeze him into the tiny high chairs provided.

Which brings me to my question -- when is he too big for the high chair?

I'm not so comfortable with the thought of putting my squirmy, wriggling, fearless son in a booster seat with no belt at a restaurant.

Should we already be sitting him in one of our dining chairs for meals? Maybe that could help prepare him for booster seats?

As you can see, although he's grown quite a bit, his knack for making a big mess while eating have not changed.

So, I don't know what to do. Any advice would be much appreciated.

He really is a cutie! Love the messy eating photos.

I kept my oldest in a high chair until she couldn't fit in one. After that, she had to sit between my husband and I..without a booster, they just don't seem safe.
Now she is almost 5 and has her moments when I wish that I could still strap her in...but overall, she does better than most. Now I just hope that my youngest will be the same way.

Good luck.

How about a HandySitt? A little pricey, but then you're not having to put them in a chair or your lap. Depending on his weight, you could also try a hook-on chair like the Phil&Teds Me Too.

Could he be any cuter? I love that he eats au naturale.

I say keep him in there until he no longer fits. Isabella makes such a mess, that I can't imagine her sitting at a table, even in a booster seat, right now, and she's almost two.

Look at those long legs!

If you find something that works to prevent messy eating let me know!

I don’t know about the HandySitt. It say’s it’s for “children between nine months and 4 ½ years within the average height and weight range for those ages.” I’ve never seen anything labeled that way before. We were lucky enough to find a Chico travel seat at a yard sale, and we like it. It only goes up to 37 lbs though and you can’t use it on all tables or with tablecloths. If you did get something like this, go with one with long arms. My little one likes to bounce in his, and I can’t see the short arm ones staying on the table. What about something like this http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?e=product&pid=27475&st=2002. It goes to 50 lbs and has a three point harness. That way it should last for a long time. Even though our sons are the same age, I don’t think I will have to worry about this for a while. Little Elvis looks way taller, but I’m pretty short myself.

We used the booster seats that tie to a chair. M hated the high chair and never used it past eight months of age. Which was fine with me. I hated looking at that big ol' high chair.

If he is happy with it I would not worry about it.

He is looking so much taller! He will be tall, I bet. We also ate a lot in restaurants so the sooner she was out of the high chair the better it worked for us.

I love photos that you can see their growth. High Chair photos are the best!

We have the same issue with Madigan (I love how she and Elvis are the same age!)

We use this item: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2306580

It is easy to bring with us, cleans well and works every where. LOVE IT! And it is only $20.00!

Good luck.

With my first two we let them sit in chairs too soon - and it was hard to keep them in order during restaurant visits...with Mags we will use this seat much longer!

I would allow him to sit in his high chair as long as he will let you. So much easier.
We did have a booster that belted to a chair and then we could belt our kids in, so that was okay. But we rarely used the boosters in restaurants, they are more bother than anything. And I find you can fit a pretty big kid in those wooden high chairs.
He looks so tall in his chair though, doesn't he? So cute!

Adorable! I say until they can climb out or it falls apart. My first born colored in hers until she was 3. It kept my walls safe for a little while longer.

Little Elvis is definitely getting really tall... I think that seems to have happened with in the last few months... or however long I have been reading you blog... he just seems like he sprouted right up.

I my girls were pretty young when we got rid of the high chairs only b/c I was sick of cleaning high chairs... they weren't even two years old yet... we had booster seats strapped on dinning room chairs that had straps to keep them in and seated... it worked out GREAT for us. :) This also prepared us for when we ate out. My son was out of his high chair around the same age, b/c I wanted some time between him giving it up and the girls needed it so there wouldn't be any jealousy issues w/ it. He did good too, and then by the time the girls were ready for booster seats he was wanting to be a big boy at his own chair. he did great!! :)

Trevor will be 5 the end of Sept an the girls will be 3 the beginning of Oct and we haven't had a booster seat or high chair used in our house in about a year.

they also make booster seats that are portable that you can take w/ you to eat out and strap him into it... better than the ones they usually offer you... without straps. :)

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I will keep him in the high chair at home for the time being. We actually have a little travel booster seat that I've just been lazy about taking places. It makes sense to use it at restaurants. We usually just take it with us on trips to see family.
